Making Math Fun…Oct. 14, 2016

If you think math is a dull subject, you have not been watching the “Math with Matthew” videos produced by Bolton resident Matthew Beyranevand. The catchy TV segments look like “Kids Bop” style videos. The pop artist tunes sound the same, but instead of lyrics about love and drama, the talented young singers wax on about topics like pi and polygons.

When Bolton resident Gayle Joseph and Nashoba Regional High School band director Joe McCarthy got in touch this past spring, it was like they were humming the same tune. Joseph had the idea to form a community band that would play more than the marches and showtunes that are a staple of band repertoire. McCarthy had been thinking since the start of his tenure at Nashoba two years ago that he wanted to find more opportunities for students to make music.

The Nashoba School Committee’s final meetings before a summer break were devoted to crucial issues the district could face well beyond September. While the commanding topic of the June 29 and July 7 meetings was how to handle thousands of dollars in unexpected Facilities repairs, the SC also made crucial decisions on researching the district’s finances and hiring key staff.

Every summer, about this time, the deer flies arrive after wintering in hell. I used to be able to outrun them but no longer. Nothing works – they lick Deet off your body and then whisper in your ear, “That’s all you got?” While trail running in the woods, they herd up and follow you. taking turns biting your neck and ears. The kamikaze ones fly right down your throat.

“I think the night was a huge success!” said Holly Lauer, an organizer for the gala Nashoba Regional High School After-Prom Party. “We had roughly 170 students attend — we were hoping for at least 100 — and the feedback since has been fantastic.” The party was held at the high school after the May 21 prom, stretching into the early morning hours of May 22.
